I feel strongly that better fuels and technology is as close to a silver bullet for improving the livelihoods of half of the world’s population as any other intervention out there.
The Charcoal Project
Job Opportunity with MIT’s D-Lab and The Charcoal Project
MIT is pleased to announce the opening of a position working on its Harvest Fuel Initiative, a collaboration between The Charcoal Project and MIT’s D-Lab.
JOB OPPORTUNITY: CHARCOAL TECHNOLOGY SPECIALIST, D-Lab Scale-Ups, to advance D-Lab’s expertise in the areas of alternative biomass fuel production and clean cook stoves through applied research and field-base technology evaluations. Will also be responsible for providing technology support to Harvest Fuel Initiative charcoal enterprises by evaluating the technologies adopted and advising on design alterations to improve performance and optimize for production at large scale.
The Harvest Fuel Initiative was established by D-Lab in collaboration with The Charcoal Project (https://staging.charcoalproject.org/) to enable the deployment of sustainable solid biomass fuels through appropriate technology and knowledge dissemination. The initiative provides seed funding and technical assistance to enterprises working on producing and commercializing alternative biomass fuels and clean cook stoves at the base of the pyramid.
How Charcoal Fuels Irregular Armed Groups
President Barack Obama announced Friday (July 2oth) that the US was banning the sale of charcoal from Somalia to third countries. The effort is intended to deprive the Somali-based, Al-Quaeda affiliate, Al-Shabaab, from important revenue collected from the export of Somali charcoal to countries in the Gulf region.
TCP and PCIA partner to publish charcoal & briquette bulletin
In the latest issue of its bulletin, the Partnership for Clean Indoor Air focuses on the fuel side of the improved cookstove equation with an in depth discussion on charcoal and briquettes.
It provides examples of the use of briquettes as a sustainable alternative to charcoal in Africa, Asia and Latin America, and provides insight into the future of charcoal stoves with inputs from leading stove testers and developers.
The bulletin also looks at the issue of sustainable charcoal production, and new research and development towards more efficient production methods and sustainable charcoal initiatives.
We’d like to thank PCIA Partner Jean Kim Chaix, Director of The Charcoal Project, who served as our guest editor for this edition and provided support and guidance on Bulletin 29’s overall content.
