Back when The Charcoal Project was a getting its web chops we covered what we thought was a fantastic idea from a startup company called BioLite. The idea was simple: produce a stove that can reduce emissions, cut down on fuel use while also charging a cell phones or power other small electronics. We’re thrilled to see the company finally get some respect. Congratulations BioLite!
In researching the fuel briquette solutions, we discovered there were multiple options available and no decision tree on how to choose between them. The Charcoal Project team spent the first six months researching and talking to developers, implementers, manufacturers and others with experience in the field.
Our research eventually led us to Isaac Owor, founder of EnviroCoal, a fuel-briquette manufacturer based in the capital, Kampala.
“Many people believe that wood energy is a main driver for deforestation, though deforestation and forest degradation at a global level is rather a consequence of conversion of the forests for agricultural purposes such as large scale productions for pasture, oil palms, soy beans, or for subsistence production,” Florian Steierer, forestry officer of wood energy at the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations.
